Akoya pearls

Akoya pearls are one of the most famous and popular cultured pearls in the world. They come mostly from the marine waters of Japan and China and are prized for their classic, elegant appearance. These pearls are traditionally associated with necklaces, bracelets and other jewelry.

Characteristics of Akoya pearls

Origin and cultivation

Akoya pearls are cultivated in the mollusk species Pinctada fucata martensii, also known as Akoya pearlworms. These molluscs are smaller than those used to produce other types of pearls, which is reflected in the size of the pearls themselves. The main producers of these pearls are Japan and China, with Japan being considered the traditional centre for the best Akoya pearls. In our shop we sell Akoya pearls exclusively from Japan.

Shape

Akoya pearls are known for their almost perfect roundness. Although Akoya pearls can come in other shapes such as oval or drop-shaped, the most prized are those that are as round as possible.

Colour

Traditional Akoya pearls are white to cream in colour with a pink or silver tinge. However, they can also come in other shades with hints of blue, grey or gold. The luster of these pearls is one of their most characteristic features, it is very intense and sharp, which gives them a unique shining appearance.

Size

Akoya pearls are usually found in sizes ranging from 2 mm to 10 mm in diameter, with pearls larger than 9 mm being considered very rare and prized.

Shine and quality

Akoya pearls are highly prized for their high luster and surface clarity. The quality of the pearls is assessed on several criteria including lustre, colour, shape, surface and size. The higher the quality, the higher the price of the pearls. The highest quality is considered to be Hanadama grade.

Usage

Due to their classic appearance, Akoya pearls are very popular. They are mainly used to make necklaces, bracelets, earrings and rings. They are often considered a symbol of elegance and are a popular gift for special occasions.
